Aquamarine is a blue or blue-green variety of Beryl and has a hardness of 7.5 to 8. It has been found in artifacts dating back to 500 BCE in Greece. Its name comes from Latin meaning "water of the sea". In ancient lore it was believed to be a treasure of mermaids and was used by sailors for good luck and protection.
